How to Tell Your Barber What Haircut You Want

Walking into a barbershop and not knowing how to explain the haircut you want? You’re not alone. Whether you’re new to the area, just moved to Las Vegas or Henderson, or trying a new style, communicating your desired haircut clearly is key to walking out with a cut you love.

As a barber in Las Vegas, one of the most common things I hear is:
“I know what I want, I just don’t know how to say it.”

Here’s how to fix that.

Know the Name of the Haircut (If You Can)

Start by knowing what your haircut is called — or at least what it looks like. Here are a few popular men’s cuts to get familiar with:

  • Drop Skin Fade - Skin Fade

  • Low, Mid, or High Taper - Skin or Light

  • Textured Crop

  • Burst Fade

  • Buzz Cut - All Even

  • Lineup with Beard Trim

If you don’t know the exact name, don’t stress — just keep reading.

Use a Photo or Three (Seriously)

Pictures speak louder than words.
If you can’t explain it, pull out a photo — even better if it’s of yourself after a great cut. This gives your barber a clear visual reference.

At my shop, I actually encourage clients to bring pics so I can match the style and tweak it for your hair type, head shape, and personal vibe.

Talk Numbers: Clipper Guards Matter

You don’t need to be a pro to understand clipper guard numbers. For example:

  • A #1 guard is really short — almost bald

  • A #2 or #3 is standard for clean fades

  • A #4 or #5 leaves more length for styling

If you want a fade, knowing how short you want the sides vs. the top is everything.

Tell Me How You Style It

Do you wear your hair brushed forward? Spiked up? Curled with product?
This info helps me tailor the haircut to your daily style and not just what looks good in the chair.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

A good barber will walk you through the cut, explain the process, and recommend tweaks if needed. I’m always happy to break things down — no ego here, just clean work.
